Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information CompileRoad collects, why we use it, when it is shared, how long it is retained, and the choices available to you.

Key points

This overview is provided for convenience. The complete document below controls.

  • 1.

    No email or password. You choose a public traveller name. It identifies your save, but it is not a secure account.

  • 2.

    Your work is saved. Progress, coffee, badges, preferences, and editor drafts can be stored on your device and our database.

  • 3.

    No tracking ads. We do not intentionally use analytics cookies, sell personal information, or run sponsor tracking scripts.

  • 4.

    Checkout is separate. Polar handles sponsor checkout and payment details when someone buys a placement.

1. WHO THIS POLICY COVERS

CompileRoad is an educational browser game operated under the CompileRoad name and provided from compileroad.com. This policy applies when you play the game, view World Rank, submit code for judging, or buy a sponsor placement.

“We,” “us,” and “CompileRoad” mean the operator of the CompileRoad service. “You” means a player, visitor, or sponsor using it.

2. DATA WE HANDLE

Traveller and journey data

We handle the traveller name you choose and a random player ID. Your saved journey can include your level, assigned road, selected programming language, solved and skipped questions, coffee ledger, unlocked hints, badges, motion preference, and code drafts.

Code and judging data

Public example runs happen on your device. When you press Submit, your question ID, language, and source code are sent to our server so hidden tests can run. The judge returns the result and does not intentionally write that submission to a separate submissions database. Your current editor draft is still part of your saved journey until you replace, restart, or delete it.

Technical and sponsor data

We temporarily use your IP address in server memory to limit repeated submissions. Our hosting provider may also create ordinary security and request logs. If you buy a sponsor placement, Polar collects the contact, billing, and payment information needed for checkout; we may receive order, customer, and receipt details needed to reserve and manage the placement. We also receive any logo, tagline, colours, and destination URL you later supply.

3. WHY WE USE IT

We use the information above to:

  • start, save, restore, and display your journey;
  • run code, return test results, award progress, and prevent submission abuse;
  • show the public World Rank;
  • operate, secure, debug, and improve the service;
  • process and fulfil sponsor placements; and
  • meet legal, tax, accounting, and safety obligations.

Where a law requires a legal basis, we rely on providing the service or sponsorship you requested, our legitimate interests in running and securing CompileRoad, compliance with law, and consent where we specifically ask for it.

4. DATA ON YOUR DEVICE

CompileRoad uses browser local storage under compileroad.journey.v1 so the game can reopen your journey. It also stores a small legal-notice preference under compileroad.legal-notice.dismissed.v1 after you close the footer notice. We do not intentionally set analytics or advertising cookies.

Switching traveller removes the local copy from that browser, but it does not delete the server copy. Clearing this site’s browser data removes the local copy. If a server copy exists, typing the same traveller name can restore it again.

5. WHAT OTHER PEOPLE CAN SEE

Your traveller name, current level, solved count, skipped count, and rank are public on World Rank. Do not choose a name that reveals information you want to keep private.

Sponsors are labelled. Sponsor creative may link to an external site, but sponsor code is not run inside CompileRoad. Sponsorship does not affect questions, difficulty, progress, or rank.

We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We may disclose limited data to service providers working for us, when law or safety requires it, or as part of a business transfer subject to appropriate protections.

6. SERVICE PROVIDERS

CompileRoad uses Neon database infrastructure to store server-backed journeys and Polar to operate sponsor checkout. Hosting, security, and infrastructure providers may process limited technical data to deliver the site. These providers handle information under their own terms and privacy notices as well as their obligations to us.

You can read the current Databricks privacy notice for Neon and Polar privacy policy. External sponsor destinations have their own privacy practices.

7. HOW LONG WE KEEP IT

A server-backed journey, including its current drafts, is kept while that traveller record exists. Hidden-test source is used to answer the submission and is not intentionally added to a separate long-term submissions table. Temporary IP rate-limit entries cover no more than the current 24-hour window and disappear when the server process resets.

Sponsor transaction records may be kept longer for fulfilment, fraud prevention, tax, accounting, disputes, and other legal obligations. Limited copies can remain in protected backups or logs until those systems rotate.

We aim to complete a verified deletion request within 30 days unless we must keep specific records for legal or safety reasons.

8. YOUR CHOICES AND RIGHTS

Depending on where you live, you may ask to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to, or receive a copy of personal information we hold. You may also withdraw consent where consent is the basis for processing and complain to your local data protection authority.

California residents may have rights to know, correct, and delete covered information and not be discriminated against for using those rights. CompileRoad does not sell or share personal information for targeted advertising.

Email privacy@compileroad.com with the traveller name involved and your request. Because there is no password or email on a player record, we may need reasonable proof that the journey is yours before returning or deleting it.

9. CHILDREN

CompileRoad is for people aged 13 and older. If local law requires a higher age to use an online service alone, use CompileRoad only with permission from a parent or guardian. We do not knowingly collect personal information from a child under 13. A parent or guardian who believes a child submitted information can contact us for deletion.

10. SECURITY AND THE USERNAME LIMIT

We use reasonable safeguards, but no online service can promise perfect security. CompileRoad currently has no password or email sign-in. Anyone who knows a traveller name can load and overwrite that journey. Treat the name as public, do not reuse a password, and do not store secrets or sensitive information in editor drafts.

11. INTERNATIONAL USE

Our providers may process information in countries other than yours. Where required, we use recognised safeguards for international transfers. Local privacy rights still apply where the law gives them to you.

12. CHANGES AND CONTACT

We may update this policy when CompileRoad, its providers, or the law changes. We will change the date above and provide a clearer notice when a change materially affects how we handle information.

Privacy questions and requests: privacy@compileroad.com. Questions about the rules of the service are covered by our Terms & Conditions and Sponsor Rules.
